Strengthening marine conservation through sustainable tourism

A transformative investment of US$1.2 million is empowering the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association (TASA) to implement innovative initiatives that blend sustainability with revenue generation. Central to these efforts is developing eco-friendly tourism services designed to enrich visitor experiences while ensuring minimal environmental impact. By aligning tourism with conservation goals, TASA is creating a model that showcases the beauty of the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve while safeguarding its fragile ecosystems.

In addition to tourism, the initiative leverages the potential of blue carbon projects, focusing on mangrove conservation. These projects protect critical habitats and generate carbon credits, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. Moreover, TASA is enhancing the management of fisheries, coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds, ensuring biodiversity flourishes across the reserve’s expansive 132,000 hectares.

This multi-faceted approach achieves more than just environmental conservation. It bolsters the local economy by fostering responsible tourism practices and providing sustainable livelihood opportunities. Communities surrounding the marine reserve benefit from new job prospects and improved engagement with conservation efforts, creating a future where nature and people thrive together.

Supporting the Turneffe Atoll initiative

The project is the result of a partnership between Mirova through the Althelia Sustainable Ocean Fund, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) via its Blue Natural Capital Financing Facility and Blue Finance, a specialized impact investment project developer for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This collaboration provides TASA with financial and technical support to develop and implement sustainable business models. By leveraging blended finance, the initiative aims to make MPAs financially sustainable and less dependent on traditional funding sources, ensuring effective long-term management and conservation of marine ecosystems.

Impacts created

Nature

The initiative safeguards 132,000 hectares of coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds at Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve. It ensures biodiversity thrives, protects vital fish habitats, and supports blue carbon projects that sequester greenhouse gases, contributing to global climate change mitigation.

People

Local communities benefit from sustainable livelihoods, including eco-tourism and fisheries management jobs. The project strengthens food security by improving fishery productivity and fosters community engagement in conservation, ensuring long-term socio-economic growth and resilience.

Business

Eco-tourism services and blue carbon projects generate steady revenue streams for the marine reserve. This financial model ensures the reserve’s long-term sustainability, reduces dependency on external funding, and fosters partnerships that support responsible business and environmental stewardship.
