Community-led mangrove surveillance and protection efforts in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea

New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea

Safeguarding mangroves in New Ireland Province amid growing threats

Mangroves in Papua New Guinea, particularly within the New Ireland Province, serve as ecological powerhouses. They offer local communities natural defenses against coastal erosion, foster biodiversity, support fisheries, and play a crucial role in carbon sequestration. These intact habitats are a lifeline for the region's coastal resilience and economic stability.

Despite their resilience, the mangroves in New Ireland Province are under increasing threat from prospective mining activities in the nearby New Ireland Basin. This surge in industrial interest could lead to significant habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity if unregulated. Mining operations' environmental and social risks underscore an urgent need for enhanced monitoring, data-driven governance, and community-led initiatives to sustain mangrove health. Proactive surveillance and local engagement are pivotal to preserving these habitats and empowering communities to defend the natural resources on which they depend. By prioritizing sustainable practices, New Ireland Province can set a model for mangrove protection that balances ecological health with economic aspirations.

The BNC solution

In collaboration with local communities, researchers, and regional authorities, Infinity Blue has developed a locally driven monitoring campaign to assess New Ireland's mangrove ecosystems' resilience and carbon sequestration potential. This initiative centers on accurately measuring these mangroves' current extent and carbon storage capacity and identifying degradation rates. With these insights, local communities can set targeted conservation goals, protecting mangroves from the impacts of prospective industrial activities.

To bolster long-term sustainability, project leaders are also advancing a community-led coastal management plan that strengthens local governance over mangrove conservation. The initiative aims to establish a sustainable framework and includes the development of blue carbon credits, which create an economic incentive for preservation. Through benefit-sharing mechanisms, local communities and government bodies work together, establishing synergies that ensure continued conservation and the socioeconomic well-being of New Ireland Province.

How BCAF supports the Infinity Blue Mangrove Initiative in Papua New Guinea

Through this initiative, the Blue Carbon Accelerator Fund (BCAF) is instrumental in advancing the first application of blue carbon credits in Papua New Guinea. BCAF’s support enables project leaders to establish a robust financial model that ensures the program's long-term viability. Additionally, BCAF provides expertise in defining and implementing the appropriate blue carbon credit standards, guiding the project in meeting international best practices. This support strengthens financial resilience and lays the groundwork for scalable blue carbon efforts in New Ireland Province.

Impacts created

Nature

Papua New Guinea’s 18.000 hectares of mangroves support rich biodiversity and critical habitats for marine life. This project aims to protect these ecosystems from degradation through comprehensive monitoring, preserving their natural resilience, biodiversity, and essential role in carbon storage.

People

New Ireland’s communities will gain from active participation in monitoring and managing local mangroves. This approach empowers them with a sustainable role in conservation while establishing long-term financial benefits, supporting livelihoods and cultural connections to their land.

Business

This initiative allows communities and local authorities to benefit economically from conservation by leveraging blue carbon credits. Adequate mangrove protection boosts opportunities in fisheries and tourism, creating sustainable economic growth while preserving New Ireland’s natural assets.
